This is a moment that defines a politician. See Gov. Christie's response to a reporter challenging him on his combative style in dealing with the NJ legislature. It should become a youtube classic.

His response is very clear and too the point. I've been reading some of the comments on facebook where this video has circulated (many pages and individuals have linked it) and it seems 99% is positive and 60% include folks saying run for President in 2012 or shoot for the White House.
What I found very interesting was Mayor Steve Lonengan, Christie's Primary opponent who argued the governor wasn't conservative enough, did a radio spot demanding support for the steps and actions Christie has taken. It's one of those "I'll believe it when I see it." Well Lonegan has seen it and it appears he is now a fan.
There have been very few leaders in recent history who have led with such conviction.
Some of us may recall President Reagan stepping into office in 1981, pushing a drastic reduction in taxes and deregulation. Our economy went through a major recession that lasted through 1982 into all of 1983. It was very risky, because if things didn't change, he would not have been favored to win like he did in 1984.
Rudy Giuliani walked into City Hall in 1994 and restructured the entire approach of a New York City mayor.
George Pataki put together his Fiscal '95-'96 and '96-'97 budgets with considerable fiscal discipline.
Of course, we all know, their successes got them elected a second term and during the second term, spending increased, "fees" (which are taxes but not called taxes) went up and this strong will kind of softened. We don't know yet whether Christie will see some drastic change if he's re-elected, but we can hope that he does turn Jersey around. Something New York Leaders can look across the river and think about emulating.

Christie is doing what needs to be done. NJ has a choice - be forced to change, like Greece, because someone else will be forced to bail you out of your debts or decide to change, so that you can control the methods and cuts required to regain solid financial footing.
NY is facing a similar, albeit less severe, situation with its budget - hence the reason why no budget is in the works as of yet. Unfortunately, the special interests in the municipal unions are still able to make their presence known to legislators through intimidation, etc...and if they keep up the pressure successfully, it's only a matter of time until the Feds will be forced to bail us out like the EU bailed out Greece...
