It is entirely possible that on many issues, he would be no better than Obama. McCain does, of course, have tremendous upside potential, especially if he decides that his age makes him a one-term president. I strongly suspect that many of McCain's more galling positions have been politically motivated. A lame duck McCain would not have to worry about his finely honed "non-partisan, independent, moderate" image.
