Although I will not go into the details on the subject, as it would just continue the discussion of the story, I will say that deciding what to "allow" be posted and what not to is a difficult question at times and, as editor of UE, I try to allow an open forum with as little censorship of views as possible. In the few hours this post was up, it is clear that this certain post needed to be removed and I want to express my apologies to all those affected by it.
Urban Elephants always welcomes the views, complaints, concerns and praise - if anyone ever deems it is warranted :( - of its readers and if there is ever something on this site that you believe crosses that line please reach out to us. If anyone needs to contact me personally, there are many ways to do so on-line, via phone or through the Urban Elephants website.
The mission of this blog has always been to discuss political matters that affect Urban America - NYC in particular. Inside baseball, outside baseball, national politics, local elections, party matters and even local scandals are fair game - on most occasions. It is also the goal of this blog for us to have a laugh and be entertained.
I appreciate the comments made by many on the site as well as to me directly today. I'd like to think we can self-police these matters and I try to allow that to be the case on a day-to-day basis. If I wasn't in a post-petitioning daze, I'd probably have been able to correct it faster than just a few hours. Let's try to keep it above-board, everyone. It makes for the best forum for discussion...

Jay, the biggest mistake about the particular post you are referring to was that it was moved to the front page without corroboration.
As an open blog, propaganda is often posted without support and left on the backend Herd section. If this post was left off the homepage, i'm sure it would not have gotten as much attention.
UE is not a news site. Its an open blog. What do we want UE to be? Do we want it to be more journalistic? Do we want it to be a free-flowing blog? This is perhaps a discussion for readership to give input. Since so many choose to come here and leave it to others to opine, perhaps it should no longer be an open blog.

I agree that UE has to watch out against publishing false and malicious allegations.
However, from personal experience, I find that it does, in some cases, produce good results.
On the old UE blog, someone (who had been smearing Jay Savino and his associates) outed my real identity and made a false allegation against me with the intention of intimidating me into silence and punishing me for disrupting his anti-Savino campaign at Room 8 (www.r8ny.com) by posting amusing and bizarre photographs in the comments. I then exposed the person by name and in detail.
I heard this from Savino himself, who got in touch with me through a mutual friend to verify my post and its content. The person (who had once told me that he would never contact Savino because of how it would be perceived) actually called Savino and tearfully denied my allegations that he had been smearing him all along. This who person fancied himself a bad ass and a standup guy (who boasted that he cursed out Velella out in front of his friends and Mayor Giuliani in front of his aides) turned out to be a coward.
These days, this person limits himself to posting attacks on the Daily News blog whenever Savino is mentioned and on other blogs (such as Rising Times in Westchester), but he's been exposed there too. As I noted in another post that got some renewed attention recently, if Savino is ever indicted for anything, this person could and likely will be subpoenaed and testify under oath about he has gone to the trouble of making up allegations against a quite a number of people.
Maybe you can wait a few hours and even a day or two before pulling the trigger and deleting a post and see how it's answered.
